Light keeps tripping the electrics

One of the lights in the kitchen keeps tripping the electrics in the whole flat. This has happened three times recently. When we switch the lights under the cupboards OFF it trips the lighting and electric (RGD?) circuits. I can switch the offending light back on again so it's not the bulb. It's a standard wall mounted switch. There's another switch in the same place for the big light in the kitchen and I haven't had any problems with that one.

Just wondering if anyone knows what might be causing this and if I can fix it myself...

  • It's probably that the switch is arcing (sparking) slightly & because modern RCD cutouts are very sensitive then they think there's a short circuit & out they go. Only sensible option is to replace the switch - cleaning can help but is usually impractical.
  • Thanks, John. That would make sense as there is a bit of a "popping" sound when it happens.

Is replacing the switch something I could do myself... I can rewire a plug and that's about it!
