Travel Insurance - European & non-European booking

Hi all,
We've just booked a holiday at the end of September to go to South Africa for 16 days.
Now, we have annual travel insurance with Aviva which is due to lapse on 3rd September, however this is European insurance only.
When we come to renew, we will get worldwide insurance so that we're covered for our trip, however talking about the booking - Will our existing European insurance cover the BOOKING only until we come to renew? We have paid via credit card just in case, but wanted the travel ins as a primary back-up.
Or shouldn't we worry, and just wait for the insurance to lapse, and get a new policy straight away?

Your insurance won't cover your holiday at all
You need insurance in place a soon as you book a trip to cover you against cancellation costs (you might get run over by a bus this morning)
(Your credit card company won't help you over cancellation costs)0 -
OK great, thanks. Get that sorted!0
