Approx cost of landscaping 1 acre?

Hi,

Firstly I understand its difficult to give a quotation without seeing the property however we are considering purchasing a house but our decision will rest on how much it will cost us to sort the grounds out.

The house is set in roughly 1 acre which is VERY overgrown and sloping in parts.

I have no idea how much professional gardeners charge but does anyone know how much it may be to get 1 acre mowed/tidied up?

Any help appreciated

Is the whole acre within the curtilage? Sometimes the land is classed as agricultural so you need to be careful about what you do with it. We nearly bought a house with an acre of lovely garden, or so we thought until we looked at the original PP for the house and discovered the curtilage was only about 2 meters, all the rest (practically an acre) was still agricultural. They had shrubs, patio, paths etc, all really nice and well cared for. We checked with the council and they said it was a breech of planning. If it's agricultural you can't turn it into a garden.

true but it can still be mown. maybe a local farmer would accept the 50 quid you bung him to to do it.

Why not just reseed it as a wildflower meadow? Cheap to do, easy to maintain, complies with any potential agricultural restrictions, looks great and fantastic for wildlife.

If you're thinking of buying a place with an acre, then you really are going to be doing a LOT of regular garden maintenance. Either you're going to be paying somebody on a regular basis - ask neighbours for recommendations - or you're going to be DIYing. If the latter, then save the initial tidy-up cost, and put it towards some decent-quality petrol tools - strimmer, big mower, hedge trimmer - because you're going to be using them A LOT.
