HSBC Card application mistake.

I wonder if anyone can advise me.
I'm a long standing HSBC current account customer and decided to apply for a credit card online.
My application was rejected. I phoned HSBC and they effectively said I messed up my application (3 times) , so the points counted against me. Must admit that as a retiree, some of the boxes were ambiguous in terms of salary and Employer details.
I corrected things and tried again - same result.
So as my credit score is now screwed, what should I do next?
I know nothing about credit ratings so any advice would be welcome.
Just a general point. Is this a risk of applying for credit online? The process doesn't seem very forgiving.
Thanks.

Don't worry about your credit score. No one ever sees it apart from you, as it is meaningless.
Leave it a month or two before making further applications, and then just one at a time.0 -
Thanks.
Do you think that it would be better to visit an HSBC branch next time to ensure that the application is correct?0 -
If you're unsure about using the online application process, then yes.0

Must admit I'm a bit cheesed off with HSBC.
The online CCard application is not very user friendly.
You can't see an example of the form in advance, so whilst you are sorting out the information to fill in you run the risk of being logged out. That's want happened to me and it counted as multiple applications!
Also on a related point. When filling in monthly income and household expenditure, should I also include my wife's pension?0 -

But on balance, I think you should stick to branch applications in future.0
