Thanks all. Definitely the consensus is to keep. We only have them in the living and dining rooms downstairs so once all of the work is finished I shall be sourcing some and fixing the missing bits.
I honestly think they work well in a room even when everything else has been modernized.

I agree - our old house was fairly clean contemporary style (i.e. white & wood) but with the original plaster moulding and picture rail painted brilliant white it looked really good.

I remember my mother saying that they were used to save on the amount of wallpaper required when it was in short supply and expensive after the first world war.

That might have been a useful benefit but I'm sure they were put up for the purpose the name describes - hanging things off.

We had already decorated the living and dining rooms in a mushroom colour with the picture rail in white. Looked really good. It will all need to be redone once the building work has finished, so should we go for white above, with colour underneath?

Yes I would do that, not only does it look betted it lightens the room. We have two roome with PRs in the bedroom we have one papered wall and three light grey, with a white rail. In our front room all walls are painted cream with a dark green rail and skirting.
