Petplan - excess increase

Bit confused as do not remember hearing about that.
I have 4 cats insured with PetPlan and excess was always £85.00
Had to put a claim in for Teddy, left £85.00 with the vets expected PetPlan to cover the rest as I do with Argos claims for Zara (she is the only one with Argos).
Got a letter from PetPlan about how much they sent to the vets and they calculated excess at £108 so £30 increase - could not tell me why. Hmmm
Premiums go up by few pounds at every renewal that is fine but never heard of excess going up.
I asked them is it because Teddy is 10 this year but they said they do not know (??) why my excess went up.
This was only second claim in Teddy's lifetime so really surprised.
Has anyone excess with PetPlan specifically gone up?
Thanks

Usually with petplan once the animal reaches senior years (8 for most dogs but does vary with breed, 10 for cats sounds about right) the xs becomes either £X pounds or a percentage of the total. You usually get a letter summarising what they've awarded you, give petplan a call & they'll clarify0

I took out pet plan in February as a new customer (dog - 14 months old at the time) & my excess is £100. Sounds like it's a new thing with them.SPC 8 (2015) #485 TOTAL: £334.65
SPC 9 (2016) #485 TOTAL £84
SPC 10 (2017) # 485 TOTAL: £464.80
SPC 11 (2018) #4850 -
Your certificate of insurance will tell you what your excess is.
The fixed excess can and does go up over the years. Mine was £60 when I used Petplan. A friend who is with them had an excess of £90 last year.
An additional excess of 20 % was applicable when a dog reached 10 year old. I don't know about cats.0 -
I've had my cats insured with PetPlan for as long as I can remember. The current cats are both 13 now.
The excess goes up each year at the renewal and you should receive the details by post then. In addition, once they get over a certain age you also have to pay and increasing percentage of any claim over the excess. I think my excess is currently something like £120 for each cat plus 20 or 25% of the claim above that.
Whether you have claimed in the past with PetPlan or not doesn't make any difference to the increases each year, it is just related to the age of the animal. Both my cats are the same age - one has had £1000s of claims and lifetime medication needs, the other virtually nothing and they both cost the same per year to insure with the same excess levels. What goes around comes around.....I hope!0 -
Thanks - I never received any paperwork at the latest reneval (got 4 cats insured with PeTPlan) so only found out when the claim was paid out that the excess has jumped from 85 to 115, they paid the rest of the bill, did not deduct any percentage.
Just got the paperwork now (asked them to resend and arrived today so will have a look in a bit)
Thanks for the replies0 -
I hope Teddy is ok, GR.0
