smart tv

I have an internet enabled tv. Broadband speed checker says the download speed in that area is 14 mb, which was a bit of a surprise given I am on ADSL and the tv is connected via wifi.

I want to move it to another room - there the speed checker says it is only 4.4 mb via wifi (the internal walls are solid brick). Any ideas on whether the tv will still work for catch up etc at that speed?

I have tried to connect the tv via power plugs but I think there is some incompatibility as it works for a bit then gives up.

SKY recommends 2Mbps for their Now TV box, so 4.4Mbps should be more than adequate.

I don't have a smart TV (yet!) but I do have a WDTV Live box connected via ethernet to the 9-year old Panasonic HDTV. I also have a desktop PC two rooms away from the router, and a laptop 3 rooms away, all connected by ethernet.

I bought a 100metre drum of good quality ethernet cable, a proper crimping tool and 20x end connectors, to make the cables, to over a half-metre of correct length. That allowed for any incorrectly- made joints, of which there were two, as i learned to be more proficient. I still use wireless for my phone, visiting grandbrats' devices, and the wife uses it for the laptop sometimes.

I have one LAN (ethernet) connection left on the router, which I use to test and repair family devices. As I have a maximum of only 8 Mbps Download and 0.6 Upload, I much prefer the Gigabit speed of ethernet. If I bought prepared cables I would have had to pay about 4x more for the lengths I need, even including the tool and ends. In addition, I would have had to buy longer lengths than I need, with cable loops having to be coiled and stored.

There is information on the net regarding how to make your own cables. I strongly advise it.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

To route an Ethernet cable round the walls from the front of my flat to the back would require at least 60 foot. And it would be ugly.

and you can't always assume the stuff you have bought was your only option. I've setup homeplugs for Smart TV's fine. You have to buy Devolo or BT though.

Your better option would be a wireless extender. Saves on getting a large length of Ethernet cable too.

My power plugs are by solwise. Do you mean that getting a different brand would work better?

How do I choose and fit a wireless extender? I'm not clued up on this at all.

At times I have two Now TV boxes and a laptop working at the same time on a 4.2mbps connection without a problem.

How big or heavy is this tv? Try putting it in the room you want to use it before trying other options. With such a big speed drop between rooms try changing router channels.

Use this to find less congested channels. http://www.techspot.com/downloads/5936-inssider.html
