Looking for cheap, compact, long battery laptop for train commute

I am looking for cheap, compact, long battery laptop for train commutes.

Ideally under £250, nice compact and lightweight and perhaps 10hr+ battery. Can anyone recommend?

depends on what you want to do... netbooks are propably the best but these dont come with cd drives. Most trains have plug points now where u can charge up laptops etc

What are you actually wanting to do with the laptop? That sort of budget is right at the bottom of the laptop market where it's going to be tough to get any of those features although potentially depending on what you're doing, a tablet would fall within your budget and meet your requirements.

Where are you travelling from and to? Which train company are you travelling on? Some provide plug sockets for mobiles and laptops. East Coast, Transpennine, Cross Country all do. You just need to ensure you book a window seat.
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.

  • There's this, for just under £200.

According to Laptopmag, it has a battery life of 10.56 hours.

Not massively spec'd (only 2GB of RAM and a 32GB HDD), but, depending on what you want to do with it, it might be suitable, and, as it sounds like you will be carrying it around a lot, it's also quite light, at just 1.2Kg.

In reality you're not going to get 10+ hours of actual usage from a pocket-money laptop. Every disc access, every sound, having the screen visibly bright, these will all reduce your running time from the ideal/advertised.

    Good point.

You can easily extend the running life of a tablet, with a Power Bank.

I use this one to run my Hudl, and my portable WiFi Dongle.

You actually have a wider choice than the overpriced electronics of Apple and the offerings of your standard laptops.

You can go for Chromebooks and Streambooks as well as Android and Linux machines. You can buy a larger battery pack for pretty much any machine.

So an ACER Aspire One Cloudbook 14 to a Asus X200MA Touch to a HP 255 G4 or Toshiba Satellite CL10-B-100. You can buy a bigger battery if you're not happy with the existing. The important thing is that you are comfortable using it.

Google Asus Eeebook for some options around £200. They are a bit limited, but without knowing more, I can't say whether they will meet your needs.
