Building credit store & when to apply for credit

Hey guys
I've got some defaults on my credit file from 2011, which will drop off in about a year. I thought having these would mean no credit at all, but a couple of months ago I got a Barclaycard 'Initial Visa' (one for bad credit) with a small limit. I've spent small amounts on it & paid them off in full the last couple of months, and my credit score on Experian has gone up.
(I've only just learnt about Noddle!!)
I'm hoping to apply for a mortgage late this year or early next year.....so, my question is - do I carry on applying for credit (I saw examples like catalogue / Argos card) in the hope that I don't get rejected & on the basis that I'll pay it off in full & it'll build my score? Or is it a bad thing to apply for any more credit if I'm going to be applying for a mortgage?
The Barclaycard & an old loan (pre defaults) is all the credit I have now.
Thank you!

Just keep using your card, clear in full each month and disregard the Experian score.0
