Fencing rules confusion

Am in the UK. It talks about it on the land registry site. Unless I have confused myself with too much reading that is.0

Is it 4ft or 6ft away from his window? You mention both.
I don't think it'll be a solution sadly, he's bound to react badly to it. I'd second the shrubs idea.0 -
You need to get your deeds and properly identify the boundary location and responsibilities. If its shared you cannot force him to do anything and you definitely can't pass costs onto him after the fact. Who purchased what's currently there along the rest of it ? It would suggest to me if he removed the hedge he obviously felt it belonged to him.Bow Ties ARE cool "Just because you are offended, doesnt mean you are right" Ricky Gervais

Picture the boundary as a pencil line or piece of string. You can put your fence up to but not over that line. Your fence needs to be wholly on your land.We need to build the fence on the boundary though, as the path ,which goes around the back of our house would be too narrow if we had the fence wholly on our side.
There will be a height limit which will be set by the council or your deeds. We do not front onto a highway so I think there is no height limit.0 -
The deeds don't state who the fence belongs to, that is well established between us. Yes, he owned the hedge, it was on his side. He can do what he wants with that. I want to replace it, on the boundary, with a fence.
I don't want him to pay, I just want a fence between the houses. The gate in front of his window would be, looking at it again, 6 feet from the window.
I think I obviously got confused and read an Australian site, thanks! At least that is not something I have to do!
I know he won't like it, but the bullying he has subjected me to really has been something else. I want to legally block him out of my life as much as possible. He wants a view of my garden through his window!
We are having to move because of him, after nearly 20 happy years here. The estate agent has told us to get a fence up because people will be put off! Ironic really.0 -
we are having to take him to court.
Also, we are selling because of him and the estate agent has said it all looks a bit 'open' so needs more privacy.
Did the estate agent tell you that when the purchaser's solicitor asks 'have there been any disputes with neighbours', you will have to say 'yes' and then the buyer will possibly run a mile???

Yes I do. But he caused the dispute the day he moved in so we had no control over it really... The initial dispute is now resolved, so I think we can put that on the form. But yes, people may be put off about the bullying behaviour if they look into it. Anything now is personal, I would say, in that he hates us for not allowing him to do what he wanted to do, which was build an extension over a third of our tiny courtyard garden!!! I think he would be ok with other people.0

I understood only official disputes had to be declared.
When we where on the move we had been at loggerheads with the new next door neighbours for the 3 long years they arrived changing their world...and of course ours... several other neighbours around them where not happy either which was mainly about the fences they erected had the locals joking at first that it was now like a prison..... We did not declare anything to the new owner and he has had no problems with them either....I guess because he purchased our previous property with all fences in place...that makes all the difference its changes people often dislike.0
