microphone and skype

I bought an over the ear headset and microphone to use with skype which I plug into the back of my hard drive. I was talking to someone for the first time and they said they could hardly hear me and I kept disappearing. I really like the head and would like to be able to use . I went into my volume settings and could see the mic slider control going down by itself. I googled for a solutions and basically told to untick the automatic voice detection thing in skype option. I did a test call but it has made no difference. I have then toddled of down to Tesco and bought another mic but one that sits next to the PC as I thought the over the ear job might be duff as I got it off ebay. Low and behold the desk mic does the same thing.

Any help would be much appreciated as I need to get this working for business.

After turning off the 'Let Skype adjust audio' option did you go to the Windows volume panel and make sure the microphone volume was set to high or higher?

Edit: Might also be a Skype bug. Have a look at this link:

thank you for your reply. I have seen quite a view other forum posts about the mic automatically adjusting itself but no-one seems to know how to fix it. I have tried all the things people suggest but like many say they don't work.

I'm stumped
