Asking credit card company to withhold payment - impact?

Hi everyone,
I recently bought a flat in London which I am currently refurbishing, and given all the expense involved (including spending £1000 on a bed) I decided I really needed to cut back on the sofa, and so ordered a £500 three piece suite from sofasworld (aka Worldstores).
Long story short, they delivered on time as expected but the sofa was terribly uncomfortable ( should have known at that price!) so I asked to return it a few days later. Their website states you can return anything no question asked within 28 days - however they do not seem to be responding to me now and I'm worried they are not going to take it back - reading reviews online, seems many people have issues with their terrible customer service and have taken them to trading standards etc...
My question - I will keep on pestering them but if worse comes to worse, as I bought this on credit card, what could the ramifications be of me asking Amex to stop payment on the order? I didn't buy on credit from worldstores, so could this hurt my credit rating etc in any way? £500 is a lot to lose when the company seemingly don't care once they have your cash!!

They won't, as you have authorised the transaction.
But you should pursue the refund and involve Amex via chargeback or section 75 if appropriate, should it not be forthcoming.0 -
Two main choices. Section 75 or Amex's own refund protection. Amex is unlikely to chargeback but you never know till you try.
With refund protection you will get the purchase price or £200 whichever is the lower. So you would be accepting a loss. Look at the "Your Insurance Documentation" leaflet from Amex. Doesn't cover sale items.
Try threatening the retailer with Amex Refund Protection and see what happens.0
