I'm independent. I only cycle as far as I feel I am able to carry/push the bike home.

I have something go wrong almost every time I take it out.

I don't do cycle maintenance, clueless. Can't fix a puncture. I've only just managed to get the right "bit" to be able to pump up my tyres.

I've never been helped/offered help by any passing cyclists. I just pick the bike (and sometimes myself) up ... and trudge off home.

I tended to be like that up until a charity ride we did at work when I started commuting on bike, got someone to show me how to do the puncture repair, it's really not hard once you have done it a couple of times, all you need is the tube, tyre lever and a pump

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

That is genuinely disappointing - if I saw someone in that position I'd definitely stop and see if I can help. I've a cyclist friend and we call each other if we're out a cycle and get stuck to give a lift back as the distances are too large and generally fairly rural areas so there's not many other options. Recently he had a puncture then trouble with the replacement so I drove out to pick him up but while waiting for me, several cyclists and a few cars stopped to ask if he needed help.
