Help Please - Neighbours house problem

I hope i'm on the right board here, i have a problem with my next door neighbours house.:o

She was an elderly person who has moved into a home and has not lived in the house now for 5 years, i'm not sure which home or how to contact here.

The house is a mess, the huge conifers that separate the gardens are over grown and look like they could fall on my bungalow at any time, you can not see up her garden path to the front door as the weeds & trees are approx 8 foot high, even the postmans given up and dumps the mail at the bottom of the steps, the brambles keep escaping onto the public footpath as well as into our garden and killing all my plants.

In brief it's a total eye sore and i'm at my wits end.

Please can someone tell me who i should contact or what i should do ?
Any help would be great.:j

The first thing you should do is to contact your local council.

Unfortunatey they cannot take action if it's just untidy but should be able to take action if its lack of maintenance poses a danger, or even a nuicance.

If this bears no fruit then you can contact the Land Registry who will be able to give you any information they hold on the property such as who the owners are. It may have passed onto her relatives by now. Under the Freedon of Information Act they will give you ALL the information they have on it. There is no data protection here.

While you're waiting to find out about the lady, are you able to tidy the garden yourself?

It'd look better for both of you!

Many Thanks HugoSP & vansboy, i have submitted an online complaint on my local council website, they said i would get a reply in 2 days, so i will keep you updated.

I had thought about tidying it myself but i'm worried about breaking any rules, i was told that any branches coming onto my land i can cut down but i have to throw the branches back onto her land, which seems to be defeating the object of tidying up......, i do want to cut down a tree or shub and then get into trouble, not that you can see any of the shrubs for 8 foot weeds, but i'm getting on a bit and my own garden takes up most of my time.

    Thanks again

It probably won't matter if you do tidy it up a bit and cut it back as far as it not spreading over and entirely encroaching upon your garden.

I'm sure no-one wants it to look that bad, it's just neglected! If you think about it, it really has been long enough that if someone genuinely wanted to take care of it, they would.

Go ahead. I'd chop the tree down if I could hide evidence of it having existed :o
