Car Insurance

Hi All,

Just looking for some advice regarding my car insurance. My old policy was coming to an end and the renewal that they offered wasn't good enough so i went elsewhere. I then found another, have sorted it all out and paid the deposit (will be paying monthly). Unfortunately on the last day of my old policy I bumped into the back of someone ( everyone was ok, and only minor damage luckily). The other driver has made a claim which has obviously now wiped my years no claims.

My new policy also overlapped on the day of the accident, so i had two at the same time, however the claim went to my old insurer. My questions are, will this affect my building up of a new years no claims on my new policy if the claim was to the old? Also I will have to call up and let the new insurer know once the claim has gone through, will they be able to up my premium for this year, or will it not impact that till next?

Thanks for any help!

If you had 2 policies in force on the day of the incident then you have a can of worms!

As far as the claim is concerned you need to inform your new insurer. They could have liabilities as they were joint insurer!

You also need to inform them you have Nil NCD (this may also cause an issue as you had nil NCD to use when the policy started irrespective of the claim)

Then take it from their response to the dual insurance issue they will now discover

But you can expect a premium increase as you wrongly were given a quote based on NCD that wasn't available on your policy inception dfate
  • I did have two policies on the day of the incident, though as the driver i hit as with the same as my old insurer they new about the incident before i had even called up to report it. So they have said that they are already processing the claim should the other driver choose to proceed. I did have an NCD at the start of this policy as it started before the accident, the issue is as you say having two insurers - which was an accident on policy end dates on my part

You didn't have any NCD to take to the new policy if I have understood the issue.

You get NCD for each completed year without making a claim.

You can only use NCD on one policy at a time

You inadvertently started a new policy whilst the old one was still running.

Thus you had nil NCD on the day your new policy started as you were using any NCD you had at the start of your old policy year on that old policy.

(Worse - you never actually got any NCD for the year at all as you now face a claim, thus any NCD you had told the new company you had to take to them is now reduced by 3 years (from a usual maximum of 5)
  • Yes you are right, when you put it like that I see what you are saying. So seeing as I have now had a claim on the first day of my new policy this means this time next year I won't have a NCD then either?

Quite possibly - depends if your current insurer ends up with any liability for your claim.

But put them in the picture about your claim and nil NCD before they find out!

On top of all the other worms involved in this you don't want the extra problems should they decide to cancel your policy over this.
  • Yes you are right, thanks for the advice!
