Replace broken hard drive

My acer 5349 laptop has gone wrong, it says 'Windows is trying to repair disk errors'. I'very taken the hard drive out and connected it to my desktop to get the files off I need, but is there anything I can do to get it working again?
Otherwise if I get a new hdd to replace it, will I need to buy windows again seeing as it's on the old hdd?

Replace it with an SSD, as your CPU isn't up to much.
    From as little as £25

No need to buy another licence. You just need the ACER reinstallation disc.

    Fabulous, thank you! :-)
  • NiftyDigits, Could you send it to me again on this account.
I can only get my merv987 account on my phone and only get my hampshirebabe on my pc, neither will work the other way round for some reason.

Also look out for SSD "Upgrade kits" they are a few £ more costly but you get an external USB connector for the SSD and software to clone the drive contents to the new Drive.

Might not be the ideal situation if Windows is throwing errors but might work in a pinch and let windows sort itself out on the new drive. (If you don't have a reinstall disk that is!) ;)

  • I bought the suggested SSD and have installed it, the laptop is asking me to insert boot disk, which I haven't got.

    Really?

Don't neglect to check that AHCI is switched on via the BIOS before installation.

Your old disk had Windows on it, your new disk is empty. There's nothing to boot. You need an installation disk. Presumably Windows 10, which you can download, put onto a USB stick (8GB) (this is your ''boot disk') and install, using a Windows 8 or Windows 7 key, for a free upgrade. Do find your way into your BIOS and make sure that you're using AHCI on the SSD (look for SATA settings, or storage settings) BEFORE installing.
