Arrgh roast beef left out overnight!

I made a lovely roast beef last night for dinner and purposely only served half so we could have the rest today. I thought DH had put it in the fridge last night and he thought I had! It was loosely covered with foil but left on the side, and last night was a very warm night :(

Do you think We can still eat it? We were going to have it cold with salad but might it be dodgy? Would it be better reheated? or just chucked?

I would 100% not eat it. I'm sure people have and lived to tell the tale but I definitely wouldn't.

Cooked food sitting at room temperature is in what the USDA calls the "Danger Zone," which is between 40°F and 140°F. In this range of temperatures, bacteria grows rapidly and the food can become unsafe to eat, so it should only be left out no more than two hours.

One exception to note: If the food's sitting in an environment where the temperature is over 90°F, the USDA says the food should only be left out for one hour, so keep an eye on the clock if you're serving food on a hot day!

Personally I would eat it, but I would reheat it first. I do tend to leave food out overnight and eat it over a few days, but reheating it each time, and it being properly covered

Your nose should be your guide. If it smells bad, don't eat it. But out for one night, covered in foil, and having been cooked recently, it should be absolutely fine. Probably all-the-nicer for having been kept at room temperature.

And I write as someone now into my third month of aggressive campylobacter poisoning, having lost two stone in 9 weeks and shrinking further by the day - :( - so I'm not prone to taking any risks whatsoever with food.

    Bon appetit!

    I'd definitely eat it!
  • I'd eat it. But then, my OH is dreadful for leaving things out overnight. There are some things (like risotto) that I'll refuse to touch, but cooked meat I'd probably eat. I would reheat it though.

I'd mince it, and make cottage pie but ensure I boil the meat mixture first.

I would use my nose and if it smelt Ok then I would eat it.I grew up in a house without any sort of refrigeration whatsoever and I'm still alive and kicking and believe me as kids we ate all sorts of stuff and had very few ill effects. Our milk was kept on the top of the cellar doorstep in a metal bucket of water. But if in doubt then mince it up and make a cottage pie or chilli, but I certainly wouldn't bin it

Like Jackie I grew up without a fridge and we had leftovers.

Just reheat it thoroughly and you will be fine
