Door wedge- much more friendly to housemates if living in halls,easier to meet people during freshers week, could get crafty and personalise it if you into those kinda thing. door notice/sign to personalise door,

notebook for lecture notes, few bars of fave chocolate or whatever, (one of my friend's mum sent her a whole box of freddo bars hah),

On a more serious note,if the recipient is moving away, how about including a map of their new area? Or maybe you could do an online search and compile a list of useful local contacts such as pizza places, bars and gyms etc etc

And stamps - just in case they ever have time to write you a letter:D
