Help with an internal transfer

I went for an internal vacancy- different department and building and was lucky enough to be offered the job. My new manager called my current manager to discuss a transfer date.
My current manager doesn't want to let me go but agreed to let me leave in 4 weeks ago I gave 4 weeks notice to transfer.
Current manager then offered me the same pay as new job to stay. He then asked his manager to try to get me to stay.
I then went on holiday - pre booked - and was informed I can not transfer until my role is advertised and they have not only interviewed but taken on someone, so several weeks of not months down the line.
I spoke to my new manager who said not to worry, he would wait for me and I was by far the best applicant. He has asked the person in the job to stay until I am in a position to transfer over.
I am due back at work tomorrow and know we are no where forward in a replacement for me. Plus my manager is going on holiday for two weeks soon.
If I leave my current job and go to the new job I will lose continuity of service. I feel eventually the new manager will get sick of waiting.
Is there anything I can do/suggest etc to move this along. I can see this ending badly all because my current manager is not happy I went for another role.

Who informed you that you can't move? You sound like you work for a large organisation, can HR advise? Can your new manager's manager help? But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

My manager and his manager informed me. The more senior director tried to talk me round to staying and want happy when I said no.
I will check with HR but I feel I'm being used as a puppet. I don't know how to deal with my manager who is acting like a spoilt child. He's tried to guilt me to stay, said its no different to what I'm doing now, why would I want to leave him......Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -

Would the proactice, problem solving response to this be to see if he could appoint the runner up in the interview for your new job to fill your old job?But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

To normal people yes. When I suggested this manager reply was if I was the best candidate he doesn't want the second person..... I thought it would save advertising costs, time to cift applicants and just be a couple of interviews. But manager was having none of it.
There is the point also that they went for a job 7k more than mine now, but I still thought it was worth looking at.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
Why would you lose continuity of service for an internal transfer? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Why would you lose continuity of service for an internal transfer?
I wouldn't for an internal transfer. But if my manager doesn't let me go and the new manager needs his new appointment then my option is to leave my current job. Not what I want to do at all.
I'm in a break at the moment and going to call new manager as my current manager is now off for 2.5wks and hasn't even looked at any applicants yet.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -

There would be no break if you started the next day. A break, in law, must be a week or more between jobs. But this is all a job for HR and the "higher ups". If they want you to transfer, they can force it through. If they don't, then you can't force it! Simply getting the new job offered doesn't mean it is yours - if the employer (not the managers individually, but the employer) wants you to move jobs then it is up to them to make it happen. If they support the position of your current manager and don't want it to happen, no power on earth can make them do it.0 -

Another break to try and sort this in :-)
HR have said as my new manager is very high up (just under CEO) it is really up to him to state when I start, they are aware my current manager is 'dragging his heals' which apparently isn't doing himself any favours however my new manager has said he is willing to wait as long as it takes. This is good news for me, however I'm not sure he knows my current manager has actually not even looked at a CV yet - it's been 4 weeks already.
I've left a message for my new manager to call me but I understand he is in meetings all day today and tomorrow.
Will wait and see.....Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
When I was in a similar position (internal transfer, new manager wanted me last week, old manager wanted to keep me for another six), HR advised me that there was nothing to stop me writing to my current manager, cc HR, advising that I was giving four weeks notice in order to move to the new dept.
Old manager wasn't thrilled ...Signature removed for peace of mind0
