depends on where you live, in many places in London you can also get fibre-to-the-building hyperoptic without BT landline, although the money you save isn't really that much, personally I find 100MB hyperoptic is fantastic, very reliable dl/ul speed but obviously it's not available everywhere.
Friends a mile or so away are currently facing their only options being dial-up or satellite - they can't receive any mobile signal at all (even for SMS) and ADSL would be slower than dial-up, if it even connected.0 -
It is very much a lottery. We were lucky to get 3.5 mb before this place got BT fibre. We could watch catch up BBC, ITV and, I think, Channel 5 but Channel 4's was terrible. I gave up watching whole series because of the buffering.
Now we get "up to" 38 mb and it seldom, if ever falls below 35 mb. Now we can watch catch up TV, download stuff and stream internet radio at the same time! All mod cons...0 -
I think the most irritating part of phone-free internet is that you normally end up paying more.
For example:
50Mb Virgin internet connection with phone: £32
50Mb Virgin internet connection without phone: £30
So they just take that additional £17 line rental and add it to the internet charge; !!!!!!!s!0 -
I just did a check on virgin and the house we're buying is in a virgin area. They offer 3 options on their site... 1. Fibre+phone+tv, 2. Fibre+phone and 3. Fibre only. The prices goes up from £10/m to £32 respectively (i.e. more expensive for the fibre only option).
Is there more to it, or just a scheme as they want to hook new customers into tv and phone and gradually increase their cost over time?0 -
Did I miss something? What's the issue with ADSL? I ordered a broadband package the week before I actually moved house, I told them there was an active line into the house and what my moving date was. The router pack arrived the day after we moved in and our broadband became active 2 days later.
Had no issues with a whole household of iplayers, playstations, catch-ups and downloads.0 -
Even though virgin media requires no landline, it still costs more for broadband alone, it's cheaper having broadband their cheapest phone option.0

Lucky you! Unfortunately, other people sometimes have different experiences...0 -
Before ruling out ADSL, use a site to check your distance to the exchange.
If you're lucky and very close, then your speed will be pretty good.0
