Travel insurance: proof of ownership for gifted item?

I am putting together an insurance claim following a theft of multiple items. Two of them (both iPods) had been given to me by family members. Should I ask the giver to provide a letter confirming the gift, or any other ideas? I don't think that they still have the original receipts: I certainly do not.

Any pictures of you 'wearing' the items? Still have the original box?0

I had a camera stolen years ago and ended up sending the instructions that came with it as proof I had owned it.
Are the iPods registered on iTunes or to an Apple ID? Might the information held by Apple help?
Your relatives might also be able to get a duplicate receipt from Apple — definitely worth asking, I'm sure their point-of-sale systems are better than most.0
