Will British Gas smart meters work with other suppliers?

I have a dual fuel contract with British Gas, and have an appointment booked to have a smart meter installed. Does anyone know if British Gas smart meters will work with any other energy suppliers?

Ask them whether they are intending to install a SMETS1 or SMETS 2 meter? The latter connect to the Data Communications Company (going live next month) and will allow you to switch suppliers. BG's SMETS 1 meter will communicate only with Sainsuburys Energy. You can still switch to A N Other but you will have to read the meter.

Some SMETS1 meters may be upgraded from mid 2108 onwards to the SMETS2 standard.

They will work with Sainsburys Energy for sure.

Nope, even if you change supplier and change back to BG, they wont with BG for the 2nd time.

They are a bit naff in that sense at the minute, but smets2 will becoming soon enough.

    From an E.oN response today:

Afternoon Hengus. I've received a reply to the question I asked about Smart Meters and, as promised, thought I'd share.

We're not starting to rollout SMETS2 until the DCC is live later this year. Before this time, we'll continue with SMETS1. After the DCC goes live, there'll be a mix of SMETS1 and 2 until eventually all will be SMETS2.

Customers will be told about the implications for their particular meter when appointments to fit or change meters are made by our specialist smart teams. They'll also be told when moving into properties with existing smart meters.

    Hope this is of interest.

If you change to Sainsburys and back to BG they will work fine on both (as they are the same company), it has been confirmed by users here.

    Wont work anywhere else though.

I ve switched a couple of times now to Sainsburys/BG and vice versa. The smart meters are working fine at the correct tariffs and BG are getting the correct readings when they want them and billing me correctly but my IHD is nt displaying the correct tariff and Its now seems to be showing BG s standard tariff. I`m not concerned at all about this as I`ve lost interest in the IHD toy a long time ago.

Thanks for your reply. Presumably you can still view usage in kwH, even if tariffs aren't accurate, and there is still no longer a need for Sainsburys to send out meter readers?

They will ! I work for them. When the meters are installed we may make a couple of visits then leave you alone and will probably visit two years later or even as long as five years as BG alone have got a deal with OFGEM to go a full five years for meter inspections.
I have BG smart meters and get a card through the door every now and again to view the meters.

Thanks for that. So they're smart, but still not smart enough for BG to fully trust them ;)

It's not the meter they don't trust, it's the customer:D
