We've got a 4 bedroomed house with a downstairs bedroom. It's the master bedroom with en suite and lots of fitted wardrobes. I suppose you would call it a chalet bungalow but it's not the norm as far as that goes.

We've moved several times and the two houses we liked living in the best, were the ones in the best locations (ie near shops and train stations). Having the most space turned out to be something we were more comfortable compromising in the end.
I'd rehearse your journey to work, dropping kids at school etc. from your planned new home, to get your head round what it'd be like. Convenience of location might turn out to be something you'll miss a lot.

We increased out mortgage by £45000 to move about 5 minutes (walk) down the road. We loved the area but wanted a bigger third bedroom for our daughter. We also now have a garage and love all the extra space.

Why we moved? Children approaching school age and wanted to get them into top schools rather than bottom end ones. We did also want a bigger house so we sorted that too!

How much? We only increased our mortgage by £20k but we did put down another £125k deposit.

In 2006 1 we moved from a 4 bed semi we bought brand new in 1999 to a large 4 bed detached which was being built by the same builder directly opposite our existing house ! House then was £310k and we sold our semi for £205k so an extra £100k. I watched my house being built and was able to amend loads of things in the house. My then OH now ex NEVER wanted to move and take on the extra mortgage even though we were both working. He moaned and moaned constantly and in the end we split up and I bought him out in 2006. House is valued at near £900k now as its Greater London. I never want to leave this house - it was and always will be my dream home and makes my life complete. Thats my rational for moving up ! Lol :)

A 3 bed house with a room downstairs called a bedroom is a 3 bed house with an extra living room downstairs. A 3 bed detached house will be cheaper than a 4 bed house in the same area. I would suggest that you make sure that you are not paying the price for a 4 bed house when what you are actually buying is only a 3 bed. Not everyone is fooled by extra living rooms/studies being called bedrooms.

I've a five bedroom house, three of the bedrooms and two of the bathrooms are downstairs. Very common in this area where it's near impossible to get planning for two stories so chalet styles are built

We spent about £70k (in house price difference plus moving costs) moving house to be in a nicer area with better schools, once we discovered she was pregnant.

    Reason we moved: marriage
My now wife moved into my house, we then got married, and we wanted an "our" house rather than a "my" house. Wife wanted to be able to help choose the house and to choose the decor etc.
We also significantly up sized, adding nearly 100% to the square footage.

People move for all sorts of weird reasons.

Over the weekend, I met someone who wanted a lake. Try to buy a house with one of those in this country and it'll really cost, but just across the Channel, many things that are financially impossible here, become perfectly do-able.
