Thomas Cook raising prices for repeated searches

This has probably been reported before but I couldn't believe how cheeky it was!

I priced up a Thomas Cook holiday - £750pp. Discussed with the other half and we decided to book. Did the same search later that evening and the prices had gone up to £1100pp! Then put my browser into private mode so no cookies and voila the prices went back down to £750pp.

I have just tried the same thing 4 days later and there is still a £400 difference between the prices I am quoted when normal browsing (with cookies) and private browsing (without).

Had heard that this could happen but was gobsmacked by the size of the difference in quotes (£400!). Very cheeky.

I`ve been doing a lot of searches at Thomas cook as well, my trip was just under £400 p/p on Sunday night but rose to £425 on Monday. In my case a clean browser made no difference :(
  • The cookie monster is a myth. Prices fluctuate all the time, both up and down. They can be down, then up an hour later, and then down again in a few hours.

I was looking at a holiday for someone most of yesterday, so I probably hit the search about 10 times, but the price didn't move. Obviously a slow day on that particular flight/property.

leylandsunaddict Its not a myth at all. Its a recognised and very commonly used online sales tactic. It doesnt always work against you either. Some companies will note your recent search and discount the price on your next visit. Some will use a mix of the two (raise and discount) depending on if they need to shift the product or not.

You can always use private mode / clear cookies or in most cases refresh your IP to check you are not being taken advantage of.

Not sure where I read this (it might have been the Express online)but Mondays is the cheapest day to book flights/holidays.
