Hi
Can my bank not port direct debits over from one account to the other - with the same bank? Santander have basically told me to open a new account with a different bank... !

Whilst some banks can/will 'port' DDs over, they're by far in the minority.0

Seems so odd, fine... I'll take my custom elsewhere!0

Why not just contact the dd recipient and complete a new mandate with the bank details you want. That's what we did to move 2 dds between Santander accounts. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0

Yeah... but there's at least 7 of them. That'll take, like, ages...
Just can't understand why the bank aren't interested seeing as they are obliged to if I move bank.0 -
Depending in the DD, changing it from one bank account to another could be as easy as updating your account details at the payee. Most utility and many other service providers allow you to change your DD sort code and account number online. If they don't, call them and give them your new sort code and account number.
You'll have to monitor that the old DD disappears and the new one appears correctly but you'd have to do this if you asked a bank to make the change for you.0 -

and the others within the next 10-15 minutes. Not "ages" by any means.

If you really did want to stay with Santander (did you?), then the answer is to switch away and then back again to a different Santander account.0 -
I've just opened an additional Santander 123 account. To meet the minimum requirements I transferred my water bill and a mobile phone contract across from my existing Santander account to my new Santander account using their respective websites in less than 10 minutes.• The rich buy assets.
• The poor only have expenses.
• The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.0 -
If you want to stay with Santander switch the DDs yourself by contacting the companies - if you have on line accounts with them you can do it on line in minutes.
If you don't want to stay with Santander switch somewhere else.0
