Booked a late flight only next week to Chania.
Planning on spending a couple of nights in the city and then what ?
We've decided to do it old school.Travel by bus and find accommodation when we arrive.
Can any old hands suggest a week-long itinerary that doesn't involve long distance travel and a couple of nice resorts.
Samaria Gorge is out due to gammy knees.
Thanks in advance.

Chania is one of the most beautiful port I visited. We loved it there. Not sure what you consider 'long distance travel', but ideally, you will want to head West from there to stunning beaches, Kissamos and Phalasarna and maybe go down towards Sfinari and even better if possible, Elafonissi. However, from recollection, I think you need to factor about one hour to Kissamos from Chania, and then it's only smaller roads and no idea about buses to get you there.0

If you want a place to base yourself check out Kato Stalos, you can then relax on the beach, use it as a base to see the west of crete, easy bus journey into the centre of chania which is a lovely place.
I have done gramvousa balos tour which was nice if a bit crowded on the main tour boat. Next year I am planning four days in the region where I plan on driving down to elafonissi.
Have a great time!0 -
Just to update we did a ten day drive from Chania-Paleochora-Sougia-Georgiopolous-Chania and had a great time.
Paleochora and Sougia in particular were wonderful places with great local bars and restaurants and good accommodation.
Strangely we encountered few British holidaymakers and enjoyed it immensely ( not because of that reason I hasten to add. )
A good tour for people who like to remember how Greece was before the package holiday industry got hold of it.0 -
Balos is beautiful if you can get there.
Imbros gorge is a good alternative to Samaria.
If you need a good taxi service PM me as we found a great company this year (we've been to Crete 5 times). It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice0
