This just started a few days ago. Download and upload speeds are fine but my browser is often not loading websites or it takes ages to load them. I'm wondering if I got some sort of virus or trojan from a download? How can I sort it?

I got similar problem, and when it happens, the memory usage reaches over 1gb according to Task Manager. Windows Defender cannot find anything. I tried many things: disabling Shockwave add-on seems to help a great deal...0

You haven't told us which version of Windows or which Browser
I wonder if it's malware?
Download the *FREE* version of Malwarebytes
https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/
Install it (don't accept any free trials and/or add ons) and run it - will takes ages.
Remove all nasties and see how that goes.

Try creating a new browser profile and try again. That should narrow down the problem.
Just add your browser name to this search and you should find instructions:

It happens in more than one browser.
Could well be malware then. Try running MalwareBytes (as JB suggested), then give adwCleaner a go too:
