Opinions please ladies (or men)

Hi there,

I have no idea where this should go, but as beauty is part of this section and it's about looks, i'm putting it here; please move if this isn't the right place!

I have seen a dress (below) that I love, it's perfect on me (apple shape as far as I know) & very flattering. Dresses aren't something I wear often as I never know what suits me, but this one I just fell in love with and other than it's sleeveless, I have no complaints and feel great wearing it (will wear with a black shrug/cardigan to cover the arms)

My concern is that it's really for occasions such as the races/a meal out/wedding etc and not day to day wear, but it is expensive and I rarely go out. If I did go anywhere, those I go with wouldn't dress up for it & so i'd feel out of place, plus i'm losing weight so it wouldn't fit me for long. I can't justify buying it if it's just for going out, as it just won't be worn

However, it's the only dress i've put on & loved, I don't think there is anything that would work so well on my body and there's no doubt in my mind it looks as good as it could considering i'm a big girl.

I don't want opinions on if you all like the dress or not, some will and lots won't and i'm sure some will tell me how big girls shouldn't wear dresses etc etc

I'd like opinions on if it's too much for day to day wear (with flat/low heeled sandals & some kind've shrug/cardi . . feel free to post any that might work well with it, I like the gladiator sandals *not knee ones just normal* but don't know if they'd work)

Would you see someone wearing it and think it's strange? I think mostly it's the feel of it that feels more evening wear but it does have the skirt part with netting along the bottom and then a thin overlay type of thing, and it feels satiny.

I just can't decide if this could work for day to day wear so i'm asking you guys as it's a lot to spend and never what i'd normally dream of spending but it's flattering and not too short (on the knee so no knees showing and no risk of showing anything when sitting or anything)

Thanks for any opinions and if you are the 'nobody over size 10 should wear dresses type, thanks I will bear that in mind lol

So, ok for day to day wear? Any particular sandals (not high heels I can't walk in them), any cardi's or shrugs or other ideas to cover arms? Or don't bother as it's too much?

It depends what you mean by daywear.. I would go out to lunch with a friend wearing that dress, but I wouldn't wear it just to go to the office, or to pop to the newsagents, lol.

(Actually, it's so gusty where I live that I'd be unable to wear it without doing a Marilyn :rotfl: I usually go for straight-cut skirts and dresses.)

I do think it's nice as it happens. To dress down, I suppose I'd go with a denim jacket. It would indeed go with some flat sandals, for a more casual look or you could find some semi-fancy ballet pumps. PS I have never heard a rule that if you're not a size 10 or below you can't wear a dress. I didn't even know that was a 'thing'. But yep, if you like it buy it, I buy myself presents ALL the time. I then sing Happy Monday to me etc etc etc

I think it'd be fine for day wear - a bit smarter than jeans and a jumper round town, but not overdressed, and when it's nie and sunny out, doesn't it feel great to dress a bit nicer and walk about town?!

On a sunny day - flat shoes, either comfortable pumps if walking lots, or flat sandals. And a light cardi - both material and colour. White, light grey, or cream would all be fine.

If it's a bit cooler, then pumps and a slouchy jacket, or even a denim jacket would do the job - something like:
http://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0373889002.html - soft jersey, light grey jacket
http://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0362005001.html - slouchy jacket shown over black
    http://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0389594002.html - bomber jacket

I was out and about yesterday daytime with a bigger girl in a cute short dress and bomber jacket - she looked fantastic!

    I like the dress.

I often wear maxi dresses for going to the pub or even going shopping so I'd wear it for day wear.

Agree about a denim jacket, I've got several and wear hem with my maxi dresses.

Nice flat sandals - George, Tesco and Primark have some nice ones reasonably priced (I'm sure Sainsburys and Asda do too but I don't shop there) - would look good and I'd second balletstyle pumps too.
I think it might be a tad feminine for gladiator sandals - depends how bulky the straps are.

The only thing that might put me off is paying a lot for one dress, especially if you're in the process of losing weight.

I think if you are trying to consider it for day wear, only you can really answer that because it will be dependant on the context and environment of where you are. If you're friends are the tom-boy sort and like a beer and game of footie in the evenings, I'm thinking that dress isn't going to work. But if your days are more of the shopping with coffee and cake it's probably fine.

I suppose you could ask yourself if any of the people you spend your time with (assuming their women or dress as women!) would wear the dress, you're good to go. But if you normally live in loose jeans and baggy T's it may feel a bit akward and I am a firm believer that you can pretty much pull anything you want off as long as you have the confidence to do so. If you start to coil up and feel shy about what you are wearing it will show through and you wont have a good experience and wont wear it again.

I'm not going to give my opinion because I'm a totally different sort (I live in black with the occasional splash of colour courtesy of whatever sportswear/yoga wear I've gained from ebay) and dresses are a bit of a hassle for me because I can't run in them! ;) but it does look pretty and if this is your vibe I'd go with it; life is too short to feel that you can't do something because you are worried about what people think. But that's my opinion and like I say; confidence matters, how you feel matters.

And if I were worried about something not fitting me if my weight changed, I'd think about how much it cost in vs how much expendable income you have (if it was really such a huge loss) if it was sellable on ebay (most things you wont get your money back but will be resalable) and if it could be taken in by a tailor (or drycleaner if you know a good one- don't cut corners on this, a bad alteration could ruin an item. How good someone is at dry cleaning will have no connection to how they are with alterations IME). In my experience, stretchy things cannot be altered, man-made fabrics are hard to alter and look as good so natural fabrics of the non stretchy type seem safer to attempt to alter..

It's definitely something that could be dressed down, but being honest it looks pretty cheap. If it was £30 I'd say it was a good investment (maybe it will go into the sale), but I regularly spend £70+ on clothing and that is just not worth it. Sorry :(

I think the dress is really pretty, and could definitely work as everyday wear. I tend to think that if you love it, and you feel confident in it, you should get it. I also think that you should ignore what your friends wear when you go out and wear what you like. It's boring when you see groups of people wearing all the same clothes (teenage girls seem to be doing this where I live, I see packs of them all wearing the same jeans and identical tshirts, just in different colours).

    That's great advice, KateNikolina.

However, the OP was asking opinions on a dress, not how to make soap. :rotfl:

Its a lovely dress and I think the idea of dressing it down a bit for day to day wear is a good idea with a denim jacket. Funnily enough, I have just done the same thing and bought a dress I love, which is very dressy and not a bit like I usually wear! Sometimes it is good to step outside your usual rut, I think. I'm sure I will find an occasion to wear it, if not I'll re sell it on Ebay (which you could always do when you get fed up of your dress!)
  • I would absolutely wear the dress for the day time. I love the idea of a denim jacket to give it a more casual feel, or a plain, soft blazer. It could easily be dressed up for an evening out, too.

If it makes you feel fabulous, then don't hesitate, OP. Buy it!
