planning to buy the tools to fit carpet as there's a few rooms I eventually want to do but not all at the same time
just watched these which seem to explain it really well

looking for a recommendation for a good quality fairly priced stretcher and staple gun as the ones B+Q offer appear to be cheap and flimsy! have everything else
also....have seen hammer tackers when looking - are they necessary?

One word: Don't.
Carpet fitting is the one thing that looks easy when you watch the pros, but in reality it's very difficult. A carpetfitter will charge around £50 for a typical room. You can mess up a £300 carpet with the first cut you make.
I really wouldn't take it on.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
I so agree with Phil , we fitted our spare bedroom carpet , it looks alright but god almighty what a pain in the !!!! it wasNever, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0

I'd have to agree, when you consider the cost of the various tools, the time it would take you (very probably much longer than an eperienced fitter) and the danger of getting it wrong, it just isn't worth it. And I'd agree with the quote of £50 per room - but always worth asking for a quote from whoever you buy the carpet from - or ask for a discount if you are going to use the same company for more than one room.0

Dont even think about fitting your own carpet its not worth the bother. Its so easy to mess it up. Just get a reputable carpet fitter to do it for you. Job done !!!0

I decided to fit a carpet in our smallest bedroom, as it's not a large area, I was using redundant carpet that had previously been in another room and I could use the old carpet as a template to cut out the "new" carpet.
Even so, I found it to be a real pain of a job and ended up with a very slight gap along the skirting on one wall (this is where the bed was going so didn't matter much).
If you can find £50, or maybe slightly more for a large/awkward-shaped room, then get a professional in!0 -
decided to just get it all done at once and get a fitter...DIY'n it seemed like a good idea at the time!
only 1 of the 4 rooms is square....one is L shaped and the other 2 have 45/225 angles plus jutty inny/outty bits!, hopefully it'll be a bit cheaper to get it all done at once0 -
I tried doing it myself last year. It wasn't that easy. I suggest hiring a pro.0
