Builder's yard noise - anything i can do?

There's a builder's yard by my street. It can be quite noisy - I'm fine with the noise 9-5 ish on weekdays (well, they normally start at 8am - but not bothered by that) - it's very frustrating to have to put up with it on Saturdays and sometimes even Sundays though. Has anyone had any similar experiences and do I have any right to complain about this?

  • Hi,

Not sure if you can make a complaint if you were aware when you moved in that they were there.

Did you check what days they work before you moved in??

I would always expect a builders yard to work 7 days a week but that's just me.

There may be some law with regards to noise late into the night that someone may be able to advise you about & if they do make noise during that time then you could make a complaint about that, I am not sure if that would cover weekends though?

I think that if the builders yard was was before the houses then no you don't have a right to complain and whinge, maybe should have investigated the area before moving there. However if the houses were built before the builders yard was started then you would have a right to complain. Many commercial businesses that are situated in residential areas have planning conditions imposed on them.

Its always a difficult one to answer because things are rarely black and white but as an example of what my opinion would be is , If someone who lived in a town or city then moved to the country and didn't like the noise of the cows mooing or the smell of a farmyard then they should stop whinging and move back to the city. This does happen a lot we have lost count of city people moving to the countryside and expecting street lights ...:D

Why are you asking us? What posters here might have experienced or think is irrelevant.

The only people who know for sure are officers at your local council's Planning Dept. If you make a request to them for details of the builder's planning permission, including any restrictions on it, such as operating hours, this will answer your question.

Then, if you have grounds for a noise complaint, Environmental Health is the dept to get in touch with.
  • I would suggest contacting the Environmental Health Dept of your local Council and finding out what the position is on this.

There will be hours when they are not allowed to make any noise and it's a question of finding out what these are.

Have a check with the planning department and see if there are any restricted hours of use on the address. If they have been there as an established use for many years there may be no application but there may be something that can be enforced.
