Student Housing Contract

Yes, it's pretty important to know what sort of contract is in place.0

She's away at the moment so I'm trying to get a copy of the contractWould you believe she doesn't have one???Absolutely tearing my hair out with her for being so naive!!0

Electrical sockets hanging off the wall are a serious, unsafe and dangerous issue - Health and Safety or local council enforcers need to be involved pretty quick.
Also, you say there were 5 rooms let out but in reality there's only 4 - where does or will girl number 5 girl's rented space exist - as a sharer in one of the 4 rooms?0 -

There are five rooms from what i read? Just the fifth room was locked, no one noticed there was no photo of it (double photo of another room)
I can't see anything that suggests there are 4 rooms for the 5 of them.0 -
Yes 5 rooms and 5 photos but no photo of the room my daughter ended up with.2 photos of the attic room!!The fact that there are sockets hanging off the wall is definitely concerning and still haven't been fixed since 2 nd July. How can the house have a valid electrical certificate???0

Electrical certificate (if there is one) is valid for 5 years so it is easy for things to deteriorate after the event.
Some residents don't care and don't report issues. Some landlords don't care and don't repair issues.
Overall, I think you are missing the point of University. It *is* for your Daughter to act as a grown-up, make her own mistakes, not have Mum and Dad to sort things out. There are resources at the Council and Uni to help her sort out theses issues. By all means offer advice, but you should resist taking on all the stress yourself by wading in!0 -
Deannatrois my daughter is used to a very high standard so this was definitely not up to hers but I'm hoping there will be someone who is not so fussy and yes She had quite a talking to regarding signing when she hadn't seen all the bedrooms plus not having the promises documented!
So you think its habitable? That somebody who was 'not so fussy' could live there and be fine with it? If that's the case then I don't really know why you're going to such great lengths to save your fussy daughter from the consequences of the decision she made!
Let her live there, or deal with it herself. A not so nice room for one academic year won't kill her, and presumably the other 4 girls are her friends so she'll benefit from the experience of living with them even if her bedroom isn't great.
The issue with the socket needs sorting, but that could happen in any rental property and doesn't mean the contract is void.0 -
It's July. The landlord is probably expecting that the students won't move in until September, by which time he will have attended to any repairs and other issues.
fairly standard for landlords that operate student lets.
As for the men that were there, either they are this years tenants who haven't yet moved out or the maintenance guys who are staying in one of the landlords properties or some cash deal for the landlord.
Chances are high that by September they will be gone.

What is dirty can be cleaned, you can screw plug sockets back into the wall, you can loan her a bed if needs be. She's a student and I'm sorry, smart isn't part of the deal when renting unless you are prepared to pay over the odds for a studio student place. I seem to remember when I first lived alone, I slept on a borrowed mattress placed on an old wardrobe because I couldn't afford a bed. And I survived. And was proud I'd figured out a way around the problem. Living 'soft' doesn't develop your thinking skills.
Like I said, first take a deep breath.., your daughter will survive this and perhaps learn a much needed lesson as to what's important in life (having a bed to sleep on and somewhere cold to store food, somewhere to cook and wash). This won't do her any harm. Unless you keep stressing about it. Many people have lived in worse and survived and learned from it.0 -
Isn't living us a hovel all part of the student experience?0
