Split the bills contract
My daughter signed up for a room in a student house without seeing it as it was locked at the time (she drew the short straw and ended up with the unseen room). When she saw it after on the start of the contract it was less than half the size of the others and in very poor condition so she decided to try and find another tenant for it.The girls have been pressurising her to give her bank details to enable them to sign up with a company called Split the Bills even though she is not moving into the room. She was very naive and succumbed to their pressure and went online and registered as they said to her "just register and then you can cancel"Two very silly decisions without being thorough and reading the contracts!,,Can she cancel the contract as they said or will she be tied into paying for energy she will not use in a room she will not use???If we find another student for the room then there's not a big issue but the room is so awful that it is possible we could be paying bills for the other 4 housemates!!!!!Please can someone advise? Thank you in advance

There's no hidden fees. Just £1.50 a week and a one-off £10 set up fee for each housemate.0 -
But she shouldn't even have signed up to this. Will she be able to get out of this??0

She needs to check if there is a cooling off period and if she is still within it.
If so, get her to tell them to cancel - do it by phone and back it up with an email and a letter as well.
Also notify her bank that any demands for payment they receive from these people should not be honoured, and also tell the bank to cancel any standing order or direct debit they set up on the account and make sure it stays cancelled.
£"1.50 a week per person on top of any energy bills makes them very expensive.0 -
Yes I agree and my thoughts exactly .Thank you0

Hi Louisc
Really sorry to hear about this
We work with Split The Bills, and we'd be happy to put your daughter in touch with them directly, but due to forum rules we can't post contact info up here.
If you pop me an email using the details in my profile I can give you the name and email address of STB's Customer Care Manager. We've made them aware of your post and they'd be happy to offer more advice.
Sorry I can't fix the issue, but I hope this helps a bit, I'm sure STB will be able to give better advice once your daughter has made contact with their Customer Care Manager.
Kind regards
Jenny
