Just realised I have posted this thread twice, apologies.About 30 min after I had posted last night,it still hadn't appeared on the DIY index,so I thought it must have been lost in the ether.
Not a life-changing question,I know, but it is an issue that OH and I sometimes lock horns over,so I am curious as to the orientation people put plates and bowls into their dishwasher.
Any dishwasher I have ever owned, the slots/spikes that bowl and plates rest in,lean backwards slightly. When I pack the dishwasher,I have all plates/bowls facing the front/outwards,so the back leaning back a little. My OH,on the other hand, places everything "face-down".
This often results in plates needing to be re-washed because ,I think, the dirty surfaces has not even got wet.The way I pack, things never/rarely need a re-wash,but I can't really think of a scientific reason why this would be.Is there an explanation? Is it to do with the direction the arms spray water?
Thank you for humouring me on a Saturday night :D.

All I can add is, whatever way I do it, my wife always does the opposite. When one has started to load, we either have to let them finish, or restart repacking the lot. Might have something to do with her left handedness....

Wheni The had a dishwasher I stacker all the plates so the side you eat off was upright but tilted towards the centre of the tray. Bowls the same- all cups in rows on top shelf and cutlery self explanatory. I didn't have any Probs with unclean plates??

Women are wired in a way that men are destined to never understand, so of course they stack dishwashers differently. If that were the only difference, I'd have a harem and wash all the dishes myself by hand. :rotfl:

I only have a counter top washer, so maybe slightly different to full sized models, but when loading it I just bear in mind the jets of water come from the rotating arm(s) below, so will those jets reach the parts that need cleaning the most?

Other parts should still get a wash from the water as it falls back to the bottom, but there will be no additional force to remove dirt.

Even if I stack an oven dish on top of the plates/bowls, it still gets a good wash, provided it's angled towards the jets.:)

My kids don't really get the message that if you cram things in with no gaps between (or put one bowl inside another, or two chopping boards together), then they're not going to clean.

My hubby loads it as he says I do it wrong! Fair enough, one less job for me to do. And yes, your way is the same way we do it, plates facing front.
Thinking about it, that's the same way we do it at work in our industrial dishwashers so I should imagine that is the industry standard?

I have a fairly compact built in dishwasher. There didn't seem to be the height to stack large plates vertically so we stacked them leaning at an angle. Only recently discovered the upper tray with it's built in spray heads can be moved a step higher, now those plates are vertical!

The proof is quite clear. Your way results in clean dishes. His way gives an unpredictable outcome and often the dishes need to be redone.

What's rocket science about that? :-) It must be a bloke thing!

(Perhaps it's the same logic that says that scrunched up socks will come out of the washing machine clean or that pockets don't need the odd tissue or hankie taken out first ....)
  • Can't believe I just took time out to check this lol.
I thought I was like your husband, but no, turns out I do it the right way, as you do, and for the same reasons.
On the washing machine front above, I regularly get "that washing machine isn't spinning the clothes properly" which means the filter is clogged again with various wrappers and disposable gloves (wife works in home care so always has them in her pockets). Or white flecks over everything due to tissues.
