ADT Alarm system from previous owner

Nearly two years ago I bought my house and since day 1 I found 3 ADT fobs and directions how to use the alarm on the table.
At first, i thought that this is a normal alarm system (not on a monthly payment) and i started using it. Eventually I realised that the previous owner i still paying for this system. Possibly is on a direct debit and he forgot about it.
Because I have no details at all of the previous owner and there is no way to find where he lives and his phone number, I rang ADT to inform them and cancel his contract. Their response was to keep using the system like is mine and they cannot cancel the contract or even inform the previous owner to cancel it. They said that only the contract owner can do changes which is fair enough but I asked them to inform him so that he takes action.
I asked them if is possible to buy the system from them and register my phone number onto it and they also suggested that this is not possible either. I then told them that the system is no good to me as I am not happy paying a monthly fee for it and to remove it, and they said is too expensive to send an engineer to remove it and so is stopping on my house.
I would like to keep the system but register my own number onto it so that I don't have to pay ADT to monitor the system. If this is not the case I am going to buy another alarm system that allows me to do this.
Can anybody advice please?

Can you pass a message on to the previous owner either through a neighbour who is still in touch with them or via the solicitors who did their conveyancing (who should know where they moved to)?
If not, try setting the alarm off so they get the alert
When I moved the alarm was only on a service contact, but kept going off thanks to a mouse infestation. ADT would not remove the alarm so we did it ourselves. This requires hearing protection...0 -
You need make model info, Variety of ways to reset/change code most would require engineer/ boss code to do so although some you short certain pins /jumper connection together .
You maybe able to use all the components + wiring with exception of control panel / keypad auto dialler and just replace those, If monitored there will also be a dialler somewhere sometimes incorporated within system sometimes stand alone if you have the codes you can just reprogram them without pretty much stuffed.0 -
Is it the type of system that calls a phone number if an alarm is detected? If so, which phone number is being called? Could it be the previous owners? If so, cause an alarm and he/she will get a phone call.
Also, did you not buy the house from someone - the previous owner - and do you not have any details of them, maybe your solicitor, estate agent or your deeds can furnish this info.0 -
Thanks for the replies...
In terms of contacting the previous owner, there is no possibility that i can see as I have already tried everything including neighbours etc. Here in Britain people they don't really know who lives next doorI bought the house from a company who bought it from previous owner. The alarm is registered onto to the previous owner name/phone etc. This company never been into the house.
All the letters and correspondence comes into my house so all the communication is through my address so still no joy.
I have no idea of the phone number that is connected onto the system. Although there is a kind of a control panel, there are no details or any codes onto it. Just two buttons to activate it and that's it. No screen or anything else. There is a device connected onto the power plug upstairs in my bedroom and when i have tried disconnecting it in the past, i kept getting letters from ADT. The system is monitored by ADT and I understand that if the system goes off, ADT and possibly police will attend the scene...
I believe the system i have is called ADT Keyholder Response and I managed to find a website that I can alter the system details but I don't have the username and password to do it. From my understanding this system is using a device called ''Le Sucre'' (Clinky) and there is a sim card in it. The problem is that to get software access onto it I need a boss code which I haven't managed to find yet.0 -
The easy way out would be a new control panel and wire the old sensors, bells to this.Should not take an alarm engineer long If you cant DIY0

Like someone said earlier.
Set the alarm off and see who comes running!0 -
I just had a look in the upstairs device and there is an O2 3G Sim card in it.
I am wondering what will happen if I change the sim card and set the alarm off0 -
