The Parameter Is Incorrect

Yesterday on starting my computer I got this message 'application starter the parameter is incorrect' I pressed ok and my computer behaved as usual. Nevertheless I did a systems restore and used CCleaner and Malwarebytes and for the rest of the day the message didn't reappear when starting my computer but this morning it is back.

The only other unusual behaviour is that a while ago my desktop changed and looked different but using a systems restore it went back to normal and yesterday the task bar on an email also looked different but that normalised on its own.

My o.s. is Vista if that makes any difference, I hope someone can help because I'm becoming afraid to use my computer.

Try going to Start/Run, type "msconfig" and press enter to open the System Configuration settings. Click the "Startup" tab. What items are listed? Do you need them all to run at startup? Do any relate to software that you have removed or uninstalled?

Also, maybe worth running MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware and/or a virus scan to check you don't have anything unwanted on your PC.
  • Sounds like it could be a registry issue.

When you ran CC Cleaner, did you run the Registry Cleaner?

Thanks for your replies, I looked at my System Configuration Settings I googled them all and whilst none appeared suspicious I am not tech savvy enough to know what they do so not confident enough to delete any.

I've never ran the Registry Cleaner only the Cleaner and also did another scan with Malwarebytes.
  • I suggest you run the Registry Cleaner, as it sounds like you have a redundant registry entry.

It could be a rogue scheduled task also ..
I would run adw cleaner from here : http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/

That will fish out and crap registry entries or scheduled tasks causing this

Let us know how you get on

I haven't used my computer much over the weekend but I didn't get the message last night or now but have noticed that I can no longer update Microsoft Security Essentials.

I'm thinking of buying a refurbished desktop with a Windows 10 os, I am fed up of struggling with Vista and I noticed that the free download ends on the 29th July.
