Roof question

From experience of living in a road of 30s/40s semis, I learned those smaller tiles seem to weigh heavier per square metre than the large ones, so may cause more issues.
We had both types of tiles in our road of otherwise identical houses. While I lived there, from 1987 to 2008, only the houses with the small tiles had roof work done.
In the case of the houses across the road from us, there was hog's backing as mentioned above, but also spreading at the eaves, such that a gap several inches wide had opened up between house wall and soffit. That could be something to look out for.0 -
From the photo the face of the roof appears "reasonably" flat and level and the "bulge" appears over the party wall so it looks like it is hogs backing.
I cannot see the ridge and it is complicated by being a hipped roof but if you look at the adjoining properties if the ridge and/or the face of the roof sag down then the roof timbers are deflecting or the roof is spreading (or both). If it is the latter that can be very expensive to rectify.
It should be reasonably easy to spot from the ground or use a spirit level or straight edge in the loft.0 -
Thanks very much teneighty I really appreciate your insight.
Very interesting Davesnave, that smaller tiles are heavier is very anti intuitive!0
