The government say they are still in control but this will be the end of tourism to Turkey for the rest of the year. What a dreadful 24 hours.

    Interesting development.

This has obviously happened before and the army has been held in higher esteem than politicians, they fear the rise of Islam as the country is based on a secular wetsren facing democracy since ataturk.

There's a conflict between the city educated elite and the rural poor, similar to Thailand in many ways.

It's a sad outlook in the short term but military intervention normally leads to a handing back to civilian power in a few months, will hit the economy and many people's livelihoods though.

I've got friends in Turkey at the minute and no one knows what's going on there. We were going end of August so looks like we won't be able to go now too.

Current updated FCO travel advice for Turkey:

Large scale military action is ongoing in Turkey, and a state of martial law is in effect. There are widespread reports of gunfire and explosions in Ankara and Istanbul, and the military has been deployed to the streets.

Some flights to airports in Turkey are being diverted or cancelled, and the bridges across the Bosphorus in Istanbul have been closed. The road between Marmaris and Icmeler is closed, with reports of gunfire between the resorts of Marmaris and Icmeler.

We strongly advise you to stay indoors, avoid public places, in particular demonstrations, and remain vigilant. Avoid areas of conflict and take sensible precautions if you are in the vicinity of any military or security forces. Roadblocks are in place in some areas. There are reports that social media websites are blocked.

If you are due to travel to or from Turkey over the next few days, you should monitor developments and check with your airline or tour operator before travelling.

Yes, I thought that when I switched on BBC.

But then Sky News said coup rebels have just taken control of a naval base, frigates etc.

Seems to be a TV/propaganda battle as much as anything.

The Greeks will welcome any holidaymakers due to go to Turkey, so that's the only positive to come out of it.

  • Meh,Turkey couldn't get much worse whether the coup is successful or not.
More journalists imprisoned than in China, women treated like 2nd class citizens and the creeping Islamification of a once great secular country with all that brings.
I know,I know - " we had a lovely two weeks in Bodrum and our waiter was really nice " etc etc but look beyond the cheap holiday and it's a dreadful place.
Beautiful country, ugly men with stone age attitudes.
Save your money and go to their civilised neighbours Greece.

Not sure how many Turks you know personally but that's a sweeping generalisation.

I came back from Turkey two weeks ago. I have huge sympathy for many of my Turkish friends in the tourist industry who don't fit your stereotype and don't support Erdogan.

How would you feel if the foreign media were reporting that tourists should stay away from Britain because voting for Brexit proved the population is all nasty, right wing racists?

Mersey a lot of the posts you start come hours after someone has already posted about the subject and there's a long thread already going.
