Broadband Connection Speed

My Broadband Connection Speed until about a week ago was about 5.5 - 5.7Mbps although I have always doubted it I was originally told by BT and my supplier Virgin Media that my speed should be 5.5

About a week ago I noticed the max. speed was 4.8 but very often about 4.2Mbps (at peak times it seems little faster than dial up).

I rang today to complain to Virgin Media who said that BT had re-classified my line to 4.0Mbps.

Why have they done this?

'Re-classified' is an odd word to use. It rather sounds like they have throttled the bandwidth to ~4Mbps.

I suppose for technical reasons they might restrict bandwidth in order not to over-subscribe trunk links. Is is possible that they have classified you as a heavy user and have restricted your bandwidth for that reason? Are you paying for a certain bandwidth (e.g. 8Mbps)?
  • You make it sound like 4.2mbps is like dial up??!?!?!?!?

    Up to 8Mbps
  • probably because your line can't handle much more than 4meg, (which is far faster than dial up btw), this is your sync speed, which is different to your download speed.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
