As Pennywise said, hundreds of thousands have disappeared. In my hometown, in a back street in a residential area were a general store, post office/newsagent, butcher and fish and chip shop, with a fruiterer/greengrocer just up the road. All gone, only shop a hairdresser.
Not dying , but thriving, in my local area within, 10 minutes walk we have 3 small independent grocery shops, a newsagent, a bakers, 3 chemists, a greengrocer. These all must make a profit or they would close and they all trade despite branches of Morrisons, Sainsbuys and Aldi nearby.0 -

Yours must be the exception!
In the town I mentioned as well as these 5 shops at least another 15 have closed since the 1970s.If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
I would love to use local independents more but there are a couple of problems
1) Stupid local council parking charges everywhere in town. I'm not going to pop into a couple of shops if I have to pay £2 parking or risk a ticket just for a few minutes.
2) Limited opening hours. The butcher closes at 5pm when I'm still at work.
Offer free parking (even if only for 30 mins) and later opening a few evenings a week then I'd be delighted to use the butcher, baker and greengrocer. Even better allow me to order online during the day for collection on my way home. Otherwise it's far easier to pop into the 24 hour Tesco.
Local shops will only survive if they offer the kind of personal services that the big boys cannot. They need to stop moaning about the competition from supermarkets but respond to it.0 -
I've got a few local shops near me and I regularly walk to them. I would hate it if they closed and I think it's important to support small local businesses. Some people don't and then moan when they close down. :eek:If you change nothing, nothing will change!!0
