Do you need to install a driver for the LAN adapter? Have you checked that the cable isn't faulty?

To get any sensible answers you need to provide a whole lot more in the way of details such as...

Wired or wireless - I'm guessing wired but that is usually pretty much plug and play so long as the cable and connectors are good,

    Exact messages.

    Operating system.

    Modem/router used

More details on just what messing about gets it going - sorry I know you said don't ask but without some clues all you'll get is a series of guesses one of which may solve your issue but I woouldn't want to put any money on that.

Years ago I had a desk top pc that was always extremely slow. I eventually found out the fault was the hardware. LAN adapter card?. If you've got a wi-fi dongle try that.
