another question about wireless broadband!

Hi,

Have set up wireless broadband with orange and have it working - but have got the livebox wired to the computer not wireless. Do I need an adaptor thing on the computer to get it so it would work without wires? I have the ethernet hole thing on the computer

as you may guess I am totally lost with this and any help is much appreciated!

Thanks

helen

  • There are 2 ways to get your computer to wireless connect to the livebox.

One is with a PCI Wireless Card which you would need to physically put inside your computer, or if you're not technically minded, a USB Wireless Adapter, though note you won't get the best possible speed with that (though it's fine for standard browsing etc...)

we wouldnt be after speed and wouldnt really want to go inside the computer so it looks like the usb adaptor thing will be the best bet. i will go to orange site now and have a look at them

another thing, once the usb adaptor thing was plugged in would we then not need the livebox right next to the computer - ie, it could go in another room?

edit - how does the wireless adaptor work - does it transmit the waves and then the livebox picks them up (or viceversa)

another edit!: can you get these adaptors anywhere?

Yes you can put it in another room.
They are tranceivers, they have to send and receive information. So they each transmit and receive.
Yes you can get the adaptors "anywhere". Many high street stores that sell pc peripherals will sell them and untold thousands of places online will sell them.

thanks, i know i am probably asking such daft questions but its the only way I can get my head round it!

so in summary if I get one of these adaptors and I plug it into the computer tower unit usb hole, I could then move the livebox to another room and it would send the signals to the usb adaptor which would allow us to access the internet?!

Yep. As an aside, if you don't need to put it in another room and it's within reach to connect it by cable, there's no reason to go wireless. Cable/ethernet is always preferrable unless it isn't practical.

A choice of 35 to choose from here, starting at about £9. They should all comply to the 802.11b/g standard so take your pick.

just to clarify on this. We have got the computer connected by cable at the moment and think thats how it will stay...however....if we get a usb connector thing and plug it in to our tower thing (sorry bout the use of 'thing' all the time!) we would be able to use a laptop elsewhere in the house as well as using our normal computer connected to the livebox?

    thanks in advance!

No. You plug the USB adapter into the laptop. Then the laptop connects directly to the livebox through the adapter, wirelessly, and your PC (tower thingy) will still connect to the router via the cable.

If the laptop is wireless, you don't need an adapter. If it isn't, you use the adapter on the laptop, not the tower.
