This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine.

Morning everyone.
It's my final full day here and we're off to the island of Hoy (Old Man of..) though not to go climbing. There's the Martello tower and Dwarfie Stane to visit.
Yesterday was extremely busy and extremely challenging and then we all had a leisurely evening meal together. I'll miss all the people in the group and count myself lucky that we all gelled so well.
The huge liner left harbour after not even 24 hours in Kirkwall! I suppose the holiday makers just hit the shops and the main sites before heading off. Seems wrong somehow.
I'll skip breakfast again and manage on the little packet of biscuits in the hotel room though I'll make sure I get my final one tomorrow.
Still no rain during the day time here, we've been really fortunate indeed.
Hope everyone enjoys a fine Friday.0 -
Morning GERS and all to follow. I am "watching" Goldie and the Bear with middle DGD just now - the other two yet to surface! Then the chaos of breakfast. Maybe one day they will all want the same!
Once they have gone to school I have the delights of the Friday clean round and, if time permits, a run to collect our new specs. We had a phone call yesterday to say they were ready. If time runs out we will leave it till tomorrow.
Chance of a shower today if we are unlucky they say. Yesterday afternoon was glorious and I sat out reading my book for a couple of hours.
Have a good day folks and (((HUGS))) where wanted. Enjoy your last day GERS, it sounds to have been a wonderful trip. Take care all xx"If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0 -
Morning everyone
Gers - thanks for starting us off x
Hugs to those that want/need them x
Happy birthday for those with a birthday x
Now light here, beautiful blue sky and sun shining, I have a basket of washing to put out on the line shortly. I'll water the garden at the same time - I have tomato plants growing beautifully at the moment, loads of green tomatoes just need them to ripen. Runner beans are coming along well too, I'm picking those as they are ready cutting them and freezing or prepping some and having them for dinner. Hoping for more success this year than last, I normally have some in bags in the freezer to enjoy when they are out of season but last years' crop was so bad didn't have any.
DH up and gone to work stupid early. DS1 up and getting ready for work. DS2 still in his pit.
Dinner last night was smoked sausage and mushroom pasta with creme fraiche sauce, menfolk all had a breaded chicken portion with theirs. Tonight will be something easy with chips for the menfolk, I'll probably have mushroom omelette and salad.
Yesterday I was reasonably productive, I went to town to visit building society and the bank, then came home and did quite a few jobs that needed doing on the pc, spoke to my energy supplier, and I'm in the process of putting in a complaint, not that I think it will make any difference, but I'm so cross, advisor on the phone hadn't got any constructive advice and didn't really know what she was doing.
Today I'll be heading to the SM first thing, then finishing off my complaint letter, then I'll be doing some baking/cooking. I really need to get back into that as it helps so much with desserts and snacks, and I don't seem to spend so much on "top up" shops during the week.
Keep safe and well x

Morning All
Spent yesterday washing, ironing and sorting the garden. All done now and the garden looks quite good, glad I got the grass cut as we are in for a very wet day today I believe. Although there has been a lot of rain the hanging baskets at the front were dry so they have had a good watering along with the veggies in the back.
The chap came to fit the smart meter around 9 and the oven cleaner at 12, he only took about 20 minutes as I hardly ever use the big oven - the halogen cooker is used most here.
I had an hour or so sitting in the sunshine reading which was sheer bliss. Took a couple of books away with me that I read but they were quite disappointing. This new (handed to me by a friend) is much better.
I really must do some food shopping today, I managed a meal from the freezer last night but stocks are low! I have the dentist at 12, meeting a friend for coffee at 2 and then taking DD and her bf to the airport at 4.30, they are off to Belfast for the weekend.
Gers, enjoy your last day.
RR - How's Evie?
Happy Friday! Take care. XX0 -
Morning!
DH took our dog to the park last night for his scout meeting. Poor pooch is so tired from all that running about he's still asleep - old boy that he is!
I met a friend for dinner last night. She is from Spain and spends the summer holidays there with her children. Had a heated debate about the EU vote - it rather soured the eveningLate night too so I'm feeling rather jaded.
I'm at the church today. We have French students in two of the rooms this week, an NHS rehab group and the usual Montessori children. It's very noisy at times, and the groups are demanding of me in lots of different ways, from loo roll running out to providing copies of documents. Busy day ahead I feel!
Gers - enjoy the last day of your trip. I was googling Orkney's website yesterday and showing DH some of the places you've mentioned. We would love to go there someday.
Have a great day everyone.

Morning all,
Looks like a lovely day here got dd's bedding in the wm and will hang it out after, her young man is coming for the weekend so she was cleaning frantically last night :rotfl:
I shall have a good clean through downstairs today but have to be careful as Evie will follow me everywhere and not rest, Camelot she is doing well thank you, I do think she is a bit depressed as she cant go out for a walk, but she can go for a 10 minute one on Sunday which we have to keep up for two weeks, she is normally over the fields for a good two hours a day so finding being imprisoned hard
Takeaway tonight and maybe a glass of wine or two !
Have good days all xx0 -
Morning all,
As predicted, yesterday was a long day followed by a relaxed evening. Today however will be much longer, I'll be happy if I'm home for 11pm. Given the working hours I've put in recently, I don't have much to report.
When I get a spare 30 mins, I'm reading 'The Secret' which is helping me have an appreciative and positive outlook, so this daily thread helps with that.
Gers - Enjoy your last day. I've enjoyed reading what you've been up to. Goodness, even I will miss your holiday haha!
TA - We've been warned at work that it'll be torrential! Given we've an event on we need to put lots of wet weather cover out.
Camelot - How was the oven cleaner? I saw a deal on Groupon for that and I seriously contemplated it.
redruby - Your chilled out night tonight sounds wonderful. So jealous.0 -
Speky, the oven cleaner was great, I got the deal when I bought the oven - £30 for 3 cleans, one a year. They take the trays and shelves to the van where I presume they have tanks with some horrid solution in, scrub the oven and clean the glass.
I asked the chap how much they usually charge and I think he said around £50 for the first visit, cheaper after. Probably worth it if your oven is particularly yukky!0 -
Morning everyone,
Bright and sunny although cool at the moment, we were invaded by those horrible little flies yesterday afternoon, thunder bugs we call them. They get in your hair and bite, all itchy and Bill was covered when I bought him in so gave him a cool wash down which he really enjoyed.
Had a rough night with Tilly last night, she came up to our bedroom at about 1am and woke me up. The girls sleep downstairs in the dining room and don't normally come upstairs so knew something was wrong. Sure enough there was a puddle in the kitchen which is really unlike her, so let her out whilst cleaned it up. Stayed down with her for half an hour or so then went back up but she started whining again so came straight back down, she rushed outside for another wee so stayed downstairs to make sure ok. She finally settled down just before 4 and is fine this morning so no idea what was up, she is in season at the moment so not sure if that has upset her a bit. Don't think it was an infection as has cleared up too quickly, just one of those things I guess. Glad it's my day off so could have extra hour in bed!
Not much else planned for today, my youngest DSS has managed to pick up some temp work through agency so we will finish the bathroom off ourselves. Hopefully it will stay dry all weekend so can also varnish the swing seat.
Just watching the shocking scenes from France, those poor people, so many innocent lives, we live in such a cruel world at times
Take care folks xx0 -
LAINEY I turned over to the news once the DGDs had left for school and couldn't believe what I was seeing. So many people killed whilst celebrating Bastille Day. So very sad. Mr TA's cousin has lived in Nice for years so we are hoping he is ok. I despair of the mentality of some people in the world we live in these days."If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0
