Entered closing meter readings wrong
HI all, bit of a strange question - I have just gone to enter my first meter readings with a new company and have realised that in the closing meter readings for the previous company I had entered my meter readings wrong! Meaning my new meter reading is now less than the closing one on the previous reading! I had wondered why my closing bill with the previous company was so high!
Really don't know what to do! If I ring the new company are they either going to bill me 100,000s thinking I had gone round the clock, or think that I am trying to rip them off!!
Really worried now.

If you don't advise them of the error you have now identified, who knows what will happen if it's left to the supplier's computer to work it out.0 -
Just for clarity - my current reading is 36 units under the previous reading!0

I wouldn't worry. I assume that you are switching? The new supplier manages the switch. The meter readings that you have given to the new supplier will be passed to an industry third-party for review. An adjusted meter reading will be passed back to the new and old suppliers. Readings given to your old supplier will be ignored. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

No, this is the opening readings I gave to the new supplier 3 months ago!0 -
Yeah, think I will have to get the wife to ring them tomorrow. (its in her name)No, this is the opening readings I gave to the new supplier 3 months ago!
They still go to the industry third- party that holds the EAC and AQ figures for your property. They exist to cover your situation and deliberate attempts at fraud. The two suppliers are then required to use the reading to close and open accounts.
EAC - Estimated Annual Consumption for Electricity
AQ - Annual Quantity for Gas.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Cheers, the wife is going to ring them this morning, when I read the meter I have read the dial the wrong way and wrote down a 4 instead of a 3 so the closing/opening one was 1000 units higher than it should have been!
I gave these readings to my new company as the opening readings when I joined them in April and hadnt noticed until I went last night to enter my latest readings. Will report back later after the wife has spoken to them. Hopefully all goes well.
I should have known as my closing bill was much bigger than expected, and when I have looked at the closing bill it was showing I had used 1500kw in 4 weeks! My own stupid fault for not checking properly at the time!0 -
Wife rang this morning, figures adjusted and all painless. Energy companies get a bad rap but the service from the CSR at Scottish Power was second to none. First call resolution etc. Can view it all online in 48hrs apparently

Panic over nothing as my wife told me this morning.0 -

The new supplier cannot just pass on your meter reading to your old supplier. The reading that your wife has given will still have to be looked at by the independent third-party ( the data collectors). They will either accept it or adjust the reading based on your past usage and previous meter readings. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. if you have already settled your final bill with the previous supplier then you have paid up and till the meter reads used to open/close the account.
so you could have left it as it is, and you wouldn't have been billed until you passed the opening meter reads then you can enter your up to date meter reads there after.
i.e your 36 units under but if you have settled your final bill from previous supplier then these 36 units have been paid for and you will get billed after those units have been passed. (though you may end up getting an estimated bill but this can then be nill billed).
to change the opening/closing meter reads on a change of supply will require an agreed read dispute which can take some time for it to be resolved unless its a complaint.0
