Dehumidifiers - dessicant or compressor?

We've had a lot of warm humid weather recently so I don't want the heat on but the humidity inside is getting too high. I've decided to buy a dehumidifer as it would also be useful in winter for drying clothes that can't go in the tumble dryer. We've had an EBAC 2650 for about 10 years and it's great. It's powerful enough to cover a 4 bedroom house so you just put it somewhere central and leave it running. It doesn't cost much to run and extracts about 3.5litres a day in the current weather when set to auto.
