    Not according to QI :)

I believe it was the legs of the pianoforte which were covered thus, lest the curvature of their shape (calves, lower legs, try to keep up at the back, there) give those of a delicate disposition a fit of the vapours or, indeed, incite thoughts of lust within the bosoms of callow youth.

    There y' go.

Join in! That's what I would do, sounds great.

    Or

Tell them your hobby is photography and get your camera out.

    Sounds like fun to me.

    Cheers fj
  • It is all rather embarrassing!

I think it's probably only an issue if you make it into one. I married a swedish girl and my introduction to some of her family was in a sauna;). I thought it very strange at the time, but after 35 years it has become 'normal' to socialise in this way. There's a saying - 'if you can't beat them - join them' :)

When I lived in Germany 2003 to 2009 the situation you described was quite normal on a nice sunny day in one's secluded garden with friends, family or in a seaside location.

If you go to your local lido there you'll probably find male/female/mixed sauna rooms. The single sex ones are for if you want to strip down, in the mixed ones you wear a swim costume or keep your towel over your bits.

We had a local spa/sauna, it was a special night to have a team building event there. Imagine having to look your work colleagues in the eye the next morning.

I do recall one time, a woman was walking around a 24 hour grocery store in Cologne without clothing at 3 AM and police were called in. She had lost a bet and had chosen the hour as there would be few people, no children. She received some strong words to cease and not to do it again but was not charged.

It is their culture in their country. I have always found the Germans to be so open and direct, if you were to ask about it and even to ask about it with your children present it will probably be the best explanation.

Just treat them as you would if they were wearing clothes. This is normal for them you are the strange ones. I have been to Finland I don't have a problem with any of this. Just fit in with local customs.

I just think this whole post is brilliant. Weirdly for someone on here I'm selling my house at the moment and it has really cheered me up!
