Would we need planning permission?

Hi all
We are about to complete on the purchase of a house we fell in love with from the second we walked in!
The house needs some work - carpets, new windows, new kitchen etc.
The house has a massive attached garage and we were thinking of utilising the space to make a kitchen. The existing kitchen is pretty small and we were considering using that as a utility room and converting the garage into a kitchen. We wouldn't be extending up or out just changing the use (owner previously used it for a work space by the looks of it). They have already extended slightly from the house into the garage to make a downstairs bathroom so the facility to put a door in direct from the hall to the garage is already there.
Would we need any kind of permission to do so?
Any advice welcome!
Thanks

There has been a previous extension, so it's quite possible that the proposed work would go over the limit for Permitted Development. In this case you WOULD need Planning Permission. Contact your local planning authority to find out if this is the case.
In any event, the work will have to be signed off by Building Control, and will have to meet current Building Regs.0 -
in theory should not need planning permission as you are not increasing the size of the enclosed volume which already exists (I think camptownraces misread your post). However, as stated in link below though, sensible to double check with the council

will certainly need building regulations sign off though0
