Don't have a cat myself but read it on several other sites when looking for tips on cleaning after using it for the first time and then spending ages cleaning it afterwards.
The drip tray should be well below the flames and cooking area and cat litter is pretty fire proof as far as i'm aware.
What it does do is suck up all the grease so all I do afterwards is leave it to cool then tip it in the bin with no need to actually clean or scrub the drip tray.
There's a link here with some pretty good tips on making cleaning afterwards as painless as possible.
