Mealtimes can often be a battleground between parents and kids. As a parent you want your child to have a healthy, nutritious and tasty diet, but persuading them it’s a good idea is a different matter! As the world’s leading expert and best-selling author on baby and children’s food and nutrition no-one is better qualified than Annabel Karmel to tackle the difficult problem of ‘Fussy Eaters’.
annabel.jpgFussy Eaters’ Recipe Book has over 120 recipes as well as top tips to help despairing parents. Annabel gives tips and advice on improving your child’s diet and encouraging new tastes. She suggests ways of sneaking hidden vegetables into familiar foods such as quesadillas and focaccia pizzas, and offers a healthy take on fast-food favourites like chicken nuggets with dips and sticky barbecue ribs. There’s plenty to tempt children of all ages, including pork and peanut noodles, tuna melts, trail mix bars and fresh fruit ice lollies. And for those children with food intolerances, there is a whole chapter of recipes covering dairy-free sauces, gluten-free pizzas and wheat-free birthday cake. Fussy Eater’s Recipe Book should be a ‘must-have’ for every parent in the UK.
Annabel Karmel comments: ‘It’s not surprising that we lose heart when our children turn their noses up at anything with green bits in. But rest assured you are not alone. In fact, 90% of children go through at least one lengthy stage of being fussy. What I have tried to do is create tasty, quick recipes to tempt the pickiest of eaters, tested by other little fusspots who’ve given the food the thumbs up. I also offer many top tips on how to convert fussy eaters making mealtimes a pleasure not a chore. With over a quarter of children in Britain overweight this is also a serious issue, and with eating habits often being ingrained in early life, I also hope that my book could form the best kind of preventative medicine for your family.’
“Any mother who does not have at least one of Annabel’s books in her kitchen, well thumbed and splattered with food, should waste no time in putting that right.” Sunday Times
A recent survey of 1000 mothers backed up Annabel’s concerns. The research revealed that 80% of mothers admit that they are not as strict with their children as their parents were with them. 83% of children were allowed to leave the table without clearing their plates and 42% let them eat whatever they like. A quarter of mothers said that they dread mealtimes, and nearly half admitted they had to resort to bribery to get their children to eat. Many mothers also admitted to ‘sneaking’ good food into their children’s meals.
Annabel Karmel is a busy working mother with three children so knows all about the pressures on modern parents. She has written thirteen previous titles including the bestselling Superfoods for Babies and Toddlers and New Complete Baby and Toddler Meal Planner. Annabel has recently launched a ‘Make Your Own’ range of equipment to help mothers prepare baby food (available in Boots), as well as her own ‘Eat Fussy’ chilled ready meals (Available in Sainsburys). ANNABEL’S TOP TIPS
  • BE POSITIVE: Try and make mealtimes a really positive experience. One of the most important things is to really try and hide your frustration. Praise your child excessively when he eats well or tries something new. You may need to ignore some bad eating behaviour to refocus attention on good behaviour. This will make mealtimes less stressful for you too.
  • PLAY HIDE AND SEEK: Disguise vegetables by blending them into a tomato sauce and serve with pasta. You can double bluff by leaving a few chunky vegetables in the sauce for your child to pick out, then he’ll never suspect there are still some there
  • DON’T MAKE A FUSS: If your child refuses to eat anything other than junk food, chill out. He will soon find there’s not much point making a fuss if you don’t react.
  • EATING OUT: Watch out for kids’ menus in restaurants – they often read like a fast food menu. Ask for a half portion from the adult menu instead. Compliment your child on behaving like a grown up – children’s taste in food is more sophisticated than you might imagine.
  • VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE: Do not just offer favourite meals. Offer a variety of healthy meals and keep trying new recipes. Offering only the meals that you are sure your child will eat can encourage extreme fussiness and may lead to a restricted and unbalanced diet.
