Bathroom/Ensuite Quote

Hi. I've been quoted labour costs for a plumber to do the following, and would appreciate feedback as it seems a little high.

Disconnect existing bathroom suite - £250. No disposal - we're doing it ourselves to reduce the cost. Current suite consists of a toilet, pedestal basin, 900x900 shower, bath.
Install new bathroom suite - £300. En-suite is next door to existing bathroom and is where the bathroom used to be before it was moved, so pipes can be cut under the floor in the en-suite and plumbed into the new suite. We are supplying straight copper pipes (left over from kitchen refurb) so all he's supplying are elbows and waste pipes. New bathroom suite is toilet, vanity sink, 760x760 shower, cladding for shower cubicle - all supplied by us.
Install towel rail - £150. Towel rail, fittings, and pipework supplied by us (except elbows).
Supply and install dishwasher waste pipe and disconnect kitchen radiator - £100. Dishwasher has incoming water pipe available but no waste pipe, not much needed as its right next to the drainpipe.

Total is £800 and that's for labour alone - does not include a sparky to relocate the existing shower wiring and power pulley switch into the en-suite, we'd have to find the sparky ourselves.

Is this reasonable or a rip off? We did ask how long he would take to do the work as it would take him 2 hours max to disconnect the bathroom so £250 seemed steep, and he wouldn't answer. :(

That is cheap. Nothing but cheap
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • The pricing looks "odd". Some looks really cheap like the installation but the the disconnection looks expensive.
    Thinking critically since 1996....

The only thing that's odd is breaking down each task like this. I'd have expected one price to include all of the above. Did you, as the customer, demand it broken down so much? They're probably a bit bemused and not sure what figure to put against each task so kind of doing it arbitrarily to keep you happy.

As Glasgowdan says. Would not say it was cheap but a bit odd pricing.

For disconnection and installation probably not far off the mark.
No floor tiling, wall tiling, wall prep, plastering, removal from site or electrics. All goods supplied by customer.

Basically hes charging £800 for a days work.

To clarify: he said £800 total. We were surprised because it was 99% labour so asked him to break down the cost to work out what the expensive work was, because if his pricing is correct, we can leave the dishwasher and radiator to wait until later and reduce the cost to £700 etc. We've asked another plumber to quote, need to wait for him to come round.

£800 for a day's work?? What kind of figure would you suggest is reasonable for the work that needs doing? Thanks for all the responses so far.

Well would you be happy earning £800 a day. That's £4000 a week.... I would, so if it does take a day and is all Labour I would say expensive. If it takes 2 days then about right.

Shouldnt matter what the job is its the time taken to do it. Ask him how long it will all take.

You could pay that for two hours of a solicitors time or a days labour at a garage main dealer, if you think it's too expensive for his knowledge & experience then do it yourself

ps I presume you have paid him separately for his time coming round & spending time looking at the work required & then his time pricing it up then his time splitting it all up as you requested ??

    No I thought not
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
  • There seems a fair bit of work there for £800.You could always get further quotes plus VAT.
If he worked like a snail for 4 days would you be happy?
Just ensure you both now exactly what is required and let him blitz it to a good standard.
I can assure you being self employed has costs and limitations which many people just haven't a clue....of course he has identical jobs lined up for the foreseeable future with happy clients who pay cash and don't require a receipt.
