laptop constant browser crash

Hi. I've read some pretty decent advice on here in the past...so trying here first before registering for a specific computer forum.

Ok. The big problem: My laptop has recently started crashing every time i try and open a browser (i've tried both firefox and google chrome so don't think it's browser specific). Basically what happens is i open the browser and it takes about 2 minutes to load up..... then it locks up and crashes. Saying firefox chrome is not responding. i can still move the mouse pointer around on both external mouse and the laptop pad. But i can't click on anything...(the keyboard also doesn't function...including control alt delete). The only button that functions is the on off power switch that i have to press to restart the laptop.

Also has recently started with the "unresponsive script" pop up boxes.

Any ideas on what i can do to solve this? I thought maybe a complete install of a new OS might be necessary.

Currently running an admittedly dodgy install of windows 7 premium 32bit on sp1 that replaced a pre installed windows 10. Though i didn't have any problems for the first few months.

Thanks

I only have Avast free version. I stopped all protection and restarted. Crashed and locked up again as soon as i tried to load up Firefox.

What addons do you have? Run updates?

    Compromised?

    Try safe mode with networking?

It's looking likely that i'll need to do a complete reinstall. Even when i move files around from folders to folders it crashes after a while.

So therefore i just need to chose a new os. Windows 10 is a no no. So is there anything better than Windows 7?

One of the many flavours of Linux?
Email, web browsers and "office" programmes all freely available, along with a GUI.

I tried that for a short time. Only problem was that it was difficult to use for a non techy.... and also browsing was difficult as most things i used like plug ins and programs to watch online content didn't work with Linux.

    Fair comment.
I did find BBC iPlayer was terrible under Linux, with constant buffering, where it was fine under Windows on the same connection. Subsequently found out that iPlayer is "optimised" for a Windows environment. Sometimes you have to just go with the flow...

Windows 7 works well, but get a proper one not a dodgy version that may have been altered.

Was it a fresh install? And did you install the motherboard drivers etc?

are you serious? many malwares are not picked up by av packs because they don't do anything "wrong" but if a check for a running av solution was included in the malware to then download a virus disaster...
